Daniel was born Baltenswil, Zurich, Switzerland, and came to the U.S. in 1847 where he was a market gardener and grew asparagus on one of the French ribbon farms in Detroit. His first wife was Caroline Hopp, the daughter of John George Hopp and Christiane Reinhardt. They had four daughters: Frederika (d.1839), Frederika, Caroline and Anna Maria. He also married Johanna Eleonara (Hensel) Scholz and Augusta Bitter (Sachse.)
