Marine Lance Cpl. Peter Clore, 23, of New Philadelphia, died Saturday as the result of enemy small-arms fire in Afghanistan.
He was the son of Cliff and Chris Clore.
A dog handler, he was performing his duties to locate improvised explosive devices when he was killed, according to a news release.

Lance Corporal Peter James Clore, age 23, of New Philadelphia died at noon, Saturday, May 28, 2011, while on escorted patrol in the Zad District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, as a result of enemy small arms fire. Clore was a Certified Explosives Detector Dog Handler, a position that put him ahead of his unit as they made their patrol.
Born at Westerville Ohio, December 21, 1987, he was the oldest of four children born to Clifford R. and Christine Hanigan Clore, who reside at New Philadelphia. The couple named their son after his paternal great-grandfather, Peter H. Clore and his maternal grandfather, James A. Connolly.
The family moved to New Philadelphia in 1992, and have been active in parish life at Sacred Heart Catholic Church ever since. Peter attended primary school at Sacred Heart. Among his many contributions, he volunteered as an altar server during regular and funeral Masses, earning recognition as an 8th grader for his outstanding service to the church. As he grew in faith, Peter could be counted upon as a Eucharistic Minister, and was active in the youth ministries of the church. At the time of his death, Peter was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus of New Philadelphia Council #2372.
Peter will be remembered as an industrious, patriotic young man. He joined Cub Scout Pack 89 at Sacred Heart before becoming a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 95 of St. Joseph Parish at Dover, where he obtained the rank of Life Scout.
As a member of the Sacred Heart Youth Group, Peter was involved with many projects through the years. Among those activities were his participation in the Ohio Special Olympics State Summer Games, Vacation Bible School, and numerous outreach programs and mission trips. He was a member of the Diocesan Youth Council in 2004-2005, and participated regularly in the Steubenville Youth Rally; and in November of 2006, he volunteered at the National Catholic Youth Conference held at Columbus, Ohio.
A 2006 graduate of Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School, Peter earned a varsity letter for each of his four years of wrestling, and was a qualifier for district competition his junior and senior year. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Bishop Herrmann Service Award for Outstanding Service to school and community. He was also the recipient of a scholarship from the Carl C. Stoller Post #1445 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at New Philadelphia.
Feeling a call to life in the priesthood, Peter completed his first year of education at the Pontifical College Josephinum at Columbus, Ohio before enlisting in the United States Marine Corp in 2008.
While at boot camp on Parris Island in 2008, he was recognized for his service to his fellow recruits as a Religious Lay Leader. His first deployment came in 2009 as part of the 22nd Military Expedition Unit, Detachment A.
In January, 2010, Peter was deployed to Haiti to assist in providing earthquake relief. Later in the year, he became a certified dog handler for the Marine Corps, preparing for the deployment to Afghanistan in March of this year.
When at home, Peter enjoyed relaxing by playing video games, and spending time with family and friends. With many relatives living out of town, Peter made it a priority to keep in touch with his surviving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his brother George, who this week completes his sophomore year at Wright State University of Dayton, his sister Sarah, completing her Junior year at Tuscarawas Central Catholic, and youngest brother John, completing fourth grade at Immaculate Conception of Dennison.
He'll be sadly missed by his paternal grandmother, Mary Clore of Gladwin, Michigan, and his maternal grandparents, Robert "Bob" and Corinne "Jill" Hanigan of Payette, Idaho.
Peter is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Charles R. Clore, Sr., who passed away just weeks before Peter's birth.
The community is invited to pay respects to Lance Corporal Clore Saturday afternoon from 2-4 PM while his body lies in state beneath the rotunda in the Tuscarawas County Courthouse. A Marine Honor Guard will escort the casket in and out of the courthouse from East High Avenue, prior to and following the period of mourning.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon between 1:30 and 5PM in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 139 Third Street NE, New Philadelphia.
Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by The Most Reverend Bishop Frederick F. Campbell, concelebrated by Msgr. George J. Schlegel, Fr. Jeff Coning, Fr. Ed Keck, Fr. Matt Hoover, Fr. Anthony Lonzo, Fr. James Hatfield will begin Monday at 11AM in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Overflow seating for Mass will be made available in the Gymnasium of the former Sacred Heart School.
The funeral cortege will depart Sacred Heart onto East High Avenue and then travel East on High Avenue to Delaware Drive, for interment with full military honors in Calvary Cemetery.
