John J. "Jack" Speary, 71, athletic director, hall of famer.



A Mass for John J. "Jack" Speary, a lifelong resident of Nutley, was at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Mary Church, Nutley, after the funeral from the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre St., Nutley.



Mr. Speary, who died Thursday, January 2, 2003, in St. Clares Hospital,, Denville, was athletic director and a coach at Bogota High School before retiring in 1998. He worked for the Bogota school system for 40 years. The high school gymnasium was named the Jack Speary Gymnasium.


Mr. Speary was graduated from Montclair State College, where he was a catcher on the baseball team. He was named to the Montclair University Hall of Fame.


He played baseball, basketball and football, all at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Newark, and was named to the All State baseball team as a catcher.


He also was a member the City of Newark Athletic Hall of Fame.



Mr. Speary coached various sports in Bogota and won seven league titles and one Bergen County title. He was named to the Bogota Hall of Fame.


He was executive secretary for the athletic directors of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association and secretary/treasurer of the Bergen County Scholastic League.


He was the director of the summer recreation department in Nutley for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen (nee Dunphy) Maher Speary.

Surviving are step-daughters, Eileen OMara, Patricia Isabella and Karen Purcell; step-sons, Thomas P., Timothy W. and William Maher; a sister, Marion Latino; a brother, Joseph: Uncle of Gregory Latino, Maria (nee Latino) McMurdo, Joseph and Amy Speary, and 16 step-grandchildren.
