Katherine Hayes Osborne, 87, passed away at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth, April 21, 2009, after a brief illness. She was born and raised in Chilhowie, Va., (Smyth County) and lived there until she relocated to Portsmouth to be with her family. She was a homemaker, wife, mother, sister and friend to all. She was known variously as "Granny" and by her husband's family as the "General" for her ability to bring order and she was our Prima Donna. She was the caregiver of the family and nursed her mother, Carolyn "Carrie" Hayes; her father, Reese Hayes; and her loving husband of 60 years, Johnny through a lengthy illness. She was predeceased by four brothers, Robert, JC, Gardner and Earl. Surviving her are her loving sister, Jody; her daughter, Carolyn and husband Russell Gettier; two grandsons, Jason Hawks and wife Dawn and Otis Jefferson Hawks, of Suffolk; as well as two beautiful great-grandchildren, Rachel and Zac; and loving stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled by Bradley Funeral Home, Chilhowie, Va. Services will be conducted at the funeral chapel.

Having lived in the mountains most of her life, Katherine in her later years, grew to love the Elizabeth River and its associated wild life. She especially loved watching the "big white birds," the ducks and squirrels. She will be missed greatly.
