Emily Griswold was the oldest daughter of editor, critic, and anthologist Rufus Wilmot Griswold and his first wife Caroline Searles. Her sister, named Caroline after her mother, was raised partly by her father's second wife, Charlotte Myers, in South Carolina. Emily was traveling through Connecticut with Griswold's third wife Harriet McCrillis in May 1853 when their train fell through an open vertical lift bridge. Emily was declared dead due to drowning until she was revived six hours later. After a public scandal with her father's second wife, Emily went with her stepmother Harriet to Maine. In 1860, she joined a mission in Liberia and there met Rev. Benjamin Hartley. The two were married on December 12, 1865. Due to illness, the couple returned to the United States and eventually settled in California. They had three children, Kenneth, Randolph, and Caroline (later Mrs. Angell). Randolph became an opera writer and dramatist. Emily remained an active member in the Episcopal church and was a published author, mostly on religious themes.
