R.J. Schmidt, Veteran Police Officer, Dies
Aberdeen residents and members of the police department today mourned the death of Robert J. "Bob" Schmidt, veteran member of the force and at one time chief.

Schmidt, who had retired Feb. 7, 1942, after 25 years service in the police department, died Saturday night at a local hospital after a brief illness. He had bee in poor health for a number of years but his death came suddenly.

He was chief of police in 1915-1916, during Judge J.M. Phillip's term as mayor. He was Aberdeen's only assistant chief of police and was appointed to that office Jan. 1, 1938, by the late Chief George S. Dean. He served as assistant chief both under Dean and Chief A.M. Gallagher. The office was discontinued following his retirement. He served as captain of the department prior to his appointment to assistant chief.

Born 59 years ago, in New Ulm, Minn., he had resided here for 35 years. He was a member of the Concord lodge, F. & A. M., and Knights of Pythias.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Aubrey Schmidt, Miller Junior High school teacher, Robert Schmidt, Seattle; a daughter, Mrs. Vernice Maben, Vancouver, Wash; two brothers, Ernest Schmidt, Montesano, Albert Schmidt, Los Angeles; two sisters, Mrs. Freda Zuper, Los Angeles, Mrs. J.L. Behnke, Minneapolis; three grandchildren.

Funeral services wil be conducted Thursday and the Whiteside chapel and the time will be announced later.

Robert Schmidt Laid To Rest
Robert J. Schmidt, former Aberdeen chief and assistant chief of police, was laid to rest yesterday afternoon in Memory Garden at Fern Hill Cemetery following funeral services at the Whiteside chapel.

Rev. S. Charles Shangler officiated at the final rites at the chapel which was filled to overflowing. Mrs. Robert Byrne sang "The Lord's Prayer" and " In the Garden" accompanied by Mrs. Ellen Adams at eh pipe organ. There were many flower pieces.

Active pallbearers were Chief Brice Shaw, Can Anderson, Joseph Schweitzer, Harry Berglund, James Leitch and George Eaton.
Honorary pallbearers were Glenn Bailey, Hugh Bailey, Aubry Fisher, Sr., A.B. Griffith, Ed Neeley, Lester Hitt, John Graham, Robert McGill and Fritz Eastlund.
