Pioneer Citizen of Parish Dies Here On Sunday
Grandmother Wren Succumbs At Age of 94 in Local Sanitarium
Webster parish lost a beloved pioneer citizen when grandmother Ellen Carr Wren of the Pine Grove community died in the Minden sanitarium Sunday afternoon. She was 94 years old.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Pine Grove Methodist church, of which she was a member with the Rev. Rex Squyres of Sibley and the Rev. J.J. Rasmussen of Minden officiating. Burial was in the Pine Grove cemetery with the Dennis Funeral home in charge of the arrangements.
Came From Alabama
Mrs. Wren was born November 30, 1846 in Chambers County, Alabama. With her family she moved to Louisiana in 1849, the year of the Gold Rush and the westward movement.
She attended the Pine Grove one-room school house and completed her work at Minden Female college. When she was twenty-one, she married the late G.L.P. Wren. Her husband taught school and farmed until he was elected a member of the state legislature. He served the Louisiana legislature for twelve years. His death came in 1901.
After her husband's death Mrs. Wren continued to live in the Pine Grove community. She saw that each of her children received a college education.
Grandmother Wren is survived by four children, L.P. Wren, local merchant, M.D. Wren, local dairy owner, Dr. T.C. Wren, Winnfield dentist, and Miss Ava Wren of Minden; fifteen grandchildren, Mrs. J. Drew Moreland, Mrs. William Fleming, Mrs. H.L. Cohenson, Miss Virginia Wren and Miss Eleanor Wren, all of Shreveport; Mrs. Aldius Dupuis of Port Arthur, Texas, Mrs. Myrtle Gordon and Miss Camille Wren of Baton Rouge, Mrs. L.H. Harrell and Floyd Wren, Jr. of Winnfield, Spencer Wren, Marcus Wren, Jr., Elizabeth Wren and Marcia Wren, all of Minden.
Five great-grandchildren also survive. They are Wren Dupuis of Port Arthur, Herbert Wren, III, and Harriet Wren of Texarkana, Elmo Moreland and Lamar Fleming of Shreveport.
Active pallbearers were the four grandsons and J. Drew Moreland, William Aldius Dupuis, Dr. H.L. Cohenson and T.H. Harrell.
