Harold S. Percy, Sr, 89, of 202 Thompson boulevard, president of Smith & Percy, Inc., 104 Washington street, a prominent businessman in this city for the last half-century, died at 9:15 this morning at his home after being stricken with a heart attack.
Mr. Percy had suffered a stroke Oct. 29, 1959, and had been a patient in the Mercy hospital for six weeks. Although he was left paralyzed in his right arm and right leg by the illness, his condition had improved and he was able to return to his home.
He complained of chest pains and pain the right arm early this morning and a physician was called to attend him.
The body was taken to the Cleveland funeral home where the funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. William A. Wilbur, pastor of Bethany Methodist church, officiating.
Mr. Percy is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ione Lydia Huddleston Percy; a son, Harold S. Percy, jr., 317 Thompson boulevard; a daughter, Mrs. Wilson (Carol) Worman of Syracuse; six grandchildren; four brothers J. Ward, Robert R. and David L. Percy, all of Watertown; and Leslie M. Percy of San Gabriel, Calif.; nieces and nephews.
Harold Seymour Percy was born Dec. 17, 1890, at Depauville, a son of Addison E. and Harriet Bloodough Percy. He spent his childhood in the Clayton area where his father was engaged in boatbuilding.
The family moved to this city in 1905, making their home first in Meadow street. Mr. Percy attended Watertown schools and later became employed by the Frank A. Empsall company and the Cadwell Dry Goods firm of Watertown.
On June 20, 1921, he married Miss Ione Lydia Huddleston, of Watertown, at the home of the bride's parents, 251 Stuart street. Rev. Thomas R. Husk, pastor of Hope Presbyterian church, officiated.
The couple made their home at 125 Francis street and Mr. Percy became associated with the old C. H. Anthony store, a dry goods establishment at 104-106 Washington street.
On June 16, 1928, Mr. Percy and the late George M. Smith purchased the firm and incorporated it under the name of Smith & Percy in July of that year.
The Anthony store was founded in 1890 by Charles H. Anthony who had come to Watertown from Cape Vincent.
On June 15, 1932, the store was destroyed by fire which caused damage estimated at that time at $300,000. The entire business section from the Northern New York Trust company to the Woolworth company store was damaged.
The Smith and Percy firm was rebuilt and was reopened in February, 1933, considered at that time one of the finest stores of its kind.
Incorporated at a capitalization of $50,000 under New York state law in June, 1928, the firm grew to double its capitalization by March 30, 1950, when it was filed with the county clerk's office at $100,000. The stock at that time consisted of 1,000 shares of $100 per value common.
George M. Smith, who, before becoming a partner in Smith & Percy, was an employe of the old A. Bushnell & Company here, died Aug. 6, 1935, at the age of 46. The firm of Smith & Percy later came under full control of the Percy family.
Mr. Percy was a member of the Bethany Methodist church and was a trustee of the parish. He had served on the building committee when plans were being formulated to construct the present church.
He was for years a member of the Watertown board of education, several years of which he was commissioner.
