A.P. BERTRAM, PIONEER RESIDENT, WAS LAID TO REST TUESDAY AFTERNOON

Rogers City lost one of its pioneer residents over the weekend, when eighty-one-year old Adelbert P Bertram passed away at 11:55 Saturday morning. Mr Bertram had been in failing health for the past year or so, with death resulting from a heart condition. He passed away at the local hospital.

Mr Bertram was born in Rogers City, November 2nd, 1877. Early in life he took on a man's responsibilities. At the age of 17 he took over a lumber mill and operated it successfully for a number of years employing between 35 and 50 men.

His knowledge of the lumber business took him to Cleveland for some years where he was associated with Harry Bittner and C.H. Foote in the operation of a number of retail lumber yards.

He married here February 25th, 1908, to Laura Kuhlman, Mrs. Bertram passed away in November of 1958, after a long illness.

After returning to Rogers City from Cleveland, about 1911, he led a more or less retired life, although he remained quite active in local affairs. In earlier years he was a director for the Presque Isle County Savings Bank, served on the school board for many years, and at the time of his death was a director of the Rogers City Power Company.

About 1936 he was, for a time, with a federal agency, the Farm Rehabilitation, and was Food Administrator for a time during World War I.

Mr Bertram was a lifelong member of St John's Lutheran Church and was active in its affairs for many years.

Surviving are:
...one son, A.P. Bertram, Jr. of Detroit;
...three daughters,
......Helen, of Detroit,
......Mrs. O'Neil Dillan (Laura) of Birmingham, and
......Mrs. Nelson Free (Dorothy) of Rogers City;
...a brother, Adolph, of Rogers City;
...two sisters,
......Ida and
......Lena Bertram, both of Rogers City; and
...six grandchildren.

The body was taken from McWilliams Funeral Home Tuesday noon to St John's Lutheran Church where services were conducted at two o'clock by the Rev. Louis A. Linn.

Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Acting as pallbearers were Harry Grambau, William Reutter, C.W. Heinzel, Rudolph Dueltgen Jr., Alfred Dettloff and W.H. Whiteley.
