German Emperor. A member of the Imperial House of Hohenzollen, he reigned as Kaiser of Germany and King of Prussia, and was the first German Emperor from 1871 to 1888. The son of King Frederick Wilhelm III and Queen Louise of Mecklenburg, he became King of Prussia in 1861 upon the death of his brother King Frederick Wilhelm IV, and became the first German Kaiser on Jan 18, 1871. Upon becoming King, Wilhelm I reorganized and strengthened the army. In 1862, he appointed Count Otto von Bismark as minister-president of Prussia. During his tenure he did not always agree with Count von Bismark's policies, but usually gave Royal Assent.
