Austin Obituary
Clara Austin was born at Ruthven, Iowa on July 14, 1886 and passed away at her home in this city Saturday, April 4, 1931 at the age of 45 years and eight months. She had lived in this locality all her life. About four weeks ago she was taken seriously ill, and even after a determined effort to live, she passed away very quietly.
Those who mourn her departure are, her widower, five daughters, Pearl, Fredrica, Ida, Julia and Annie, her mother, three sisters and seven brothers.
Mrs. Austin was a kind mother, and to the last her thoughts were for the welfare of her children. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Minday afternoon, April 6, conducted by Rev. Poppenheimer. The burial was made at Crown Hill Cemetery.
(Obit in the Emmetsburg Reporter, April 16, 1931. page 4) Note: The cemetery listed is incorrect. She was buried in Highland Cemetery. There is also a discrepancy in her birth year between her obituary and her gravestone, 1886 vs 1887.

Clara C. Clesle was first married to John Andrew Osterman in 1914. They had one daughter together, Pearl Hulda Osterman. They were divorced in 1915. Clara remarried in 1920 to Frederick Leslie Austin. Clara and Fred had four daughters together, Fredrica, Ida, Julia and Ann.
Clara's second husband outlives her by 34 years. Fred Austin himself dies Sept 7, 1965, in Humboldt Co., CA, an area in which three of his four daughters lived with their husbands.
