Captain Gary Perkins, DSN 3916, was hired by the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department as a civilian clerk and worked at the Records Division. He started his employment on 06/27/1960. He remained in this position until 10/01/1961 when he was transferred to the Supply Division. He was appointed to the Police Academy on 07/15/1963 where he would began his long and distinguished career. Upon graduation form the academy he was assigned to District 7. He also served in the 8Th, 3Rd, 9Th, and the 6Th Districts. Later in his career he would be the Commander of the 3Rd and 9Th Districts. He was also in the following specialized units: Tactical Anti-Crime Team, Auto Theft Section, Bureau of Investigation-Detective Bureau for 3rd District, Bureau of Support Operations, Quality Control Division as Division Commander, Juvenile Division as a Division Commander. He was appointed to the command rank of Sergeant on 02/21/1977, Lieutenant on 01-22-1984, and Captain on 01/15/1987. He was also a graduate of the FBI National Academy Course in 1986. During his career he was awarded 3 Department Awards of Excellence on the following dates of 09/01/1965, 03/01/1968, and 06/01/1968. He was also the recipient of 1 Chief Letters of Commendation on 06/07/1976. All of there preceding awards were for police work above and beyond the call of duty. When Captain Perkins retired on 09/03/1996, he had served a total of 36.19 years of faithful and dedicated service to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Captain Perkins left behind a son Officer Michael Perkins, DSN 2737, and a daughter Miss Mary Jo Perkins, DSN 2966. Both went into the field of law enforcement and became 2nd generation member s of the family to do so. Both son and daughter served with distinction like their father before them.

He was well respected among his superiors, as well as the Officers that worked for him.

Captain Perkins was laid to rest with a full police escort and the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Departments' Honor Guard Unit at St. Paul's Churchyard in Saint Louis County Missouri.
