She was born to Lucius Nelson and Lury Snow Scovil in Mantua, Portage, Ohio. She was their second child out of seven children.

She married Rodney Degrass Swasey 28 Dec 1850 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. She was his 1st wife.

They had the following nine children: Charles Harold, Sidney Lysander, Hannah Loretta, Rodney Degrass Jr., Joseph Amos, Laura Lurinda, Lucius Nelson, Franklin Joel, and Dudley Swasey.
