John Madden was probably born in Hawkins County, Tennessee.

His parentage is unknown. He is not the son of William Morgan and Isabella Anderson Madden, however there is DNA evidence that they are related. Their son, John Morgan Madden can be found at memorial #25258610.

In 1864, at the age of 18, near Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, John joined up with the Union Army, 10th Michigan Calvery Regiment, Company G. During the war, he suffered two injuries, a gunshot near his ankle and a more serious injury to his chest when his horse was shot, collapsed and landed on his body. After the war, in 1867, he was married to Eliza Yow in Hawkins County before moving to Owsley County, Kentucky in 1871.

John and Eilza had the following children: Ruth Alice, John Henry, William Jasper, Corilla, Surilda, Alexander, Nicholas and Luther. Eliza had two daughters of her own from previous relationships: Mary Jane Gibson and Sarah Zaney Trent.

In November of 1884, John was ambushed and shot dead. William Brewer, son of Howell Cobb Brewer, signed an affidavit stating this is what happened: "John was riding his horse to the post office because it was voting day. He heard some gun shots and went to investigate only to find John mortally wounded, although he was able to crawl to cover before dying." A descendant of the Brewer family had this to say, "John Madden worked some for Howell Brewer. (John) was shot and died. It happened on the road going up Sturgeon , the section of road that went up the creek, across from Fred Peters old place. Doug Burch was the last person I knew that lived there. Someone was up on the bluff above where John was shot."
