Orland was the fifth child and fourth son of Gov. David Meriwether (1800–1893) and his first wife, Sarah Hoar Leonard (1800–1859). He married Martha Rebecca Owen (~1844–1881) in 1876. They had no children. Martha was the daughter of William Wooten Owen and his wife Elizabeth Livingston.

Note: Census records mostly indicate his birth year was 1830, not 1833. His obituary and the Kentucky Mortuary Records with state his age east death was 68, supporting a Dec 1830 birth date. If 1833, his age at death would have been 65.

Interment In Cave Hill.
The [funeral] of Mr. R. O. Meriwether, who died at Ashevllle, N. C., will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence of his niece, Mrs. Samuel Dorr, 1311 Second street. The interment will be in Cave Hill cemetery.

Mr. Meriwether was sixty-eight years of age and a brother of W. A. Meriwether, the former County Assessor. He had been ill for some time and went South, hoping the change would do him good.
