Charles Francis Miles ("Chuck") was one of the most unforgettable souls I have ever known.

From the moment I met him -in the fall of 1979- I felt as if I had known him all of my life.

Chuck had the ability to steal your heart with the flash of his "Cheshire grin".

His time on this earth was ever so brief, but so meaningful to those who loved him.

Shortly after midnight on July 4 1986, Chuck's Bronco was surrounded by three "West-side Crip" members. While he was arguing with one of them, another stepped out of the darkness and pointed a 9mm. hand gun into the cab -past the passenger's face- and fired a single round into Chuck's right side. The bullet ricochet off his rib cage and perforated his heart, killing him instantly.

The suspects were arrested, but due to lack of evidence (one witness was shot, another threatened to be) the case was dismissed. His murderers were never brought to justice, and now, all three are believed to be dead themselves.

There are no words to express my devastation over his death. No sentiment powerful enough to describe his absence.

It is a void never to know light again.

In the instant his heart stopped beating...my childhood perished.

May God bless him, and may God bless me with his memory for the rest of my days on this earth.

I will see you again my dear friend...someday...I will see that amazing, infectious grin again!

-----------To Where You Are----------

Who can say for certain maybe you're still here.

I feel you all around me, your memory so clear,

Deep in the stillness I can hear you speak,

You're still an inspiration, can it be

And you are watching over from up above.

Fly me up to where you are beyond the distant star,

I wish upon tonight.

To see you smile,

If only for a while to know you're there,

A breath a way's not far to where you are.

Are you glad to see me, Here inside my dreams,

And isn't faith believing all power can't be seen.

As my heart holds you just one beat away

I cherish all you gave me every day.

Watching me from up above.

And I believe that angels breath,

Fly me up to where you are beyond the distant star,

I wish upon tonight.

To see you smile,

If only for a while to know you're there,

A breath a way's not far to where you are.

I know you're there

A breath a way's not far to where you are.
