OBITUARY FROM THE NEW LISBON LIBRARY COLLECTION
Curtis : Mary M. Cherry was born at Marysville , Ohio, May 16, 1844 and in the following August removed with her parents to Chicago, Illinois, where they lived ten years, when they removed to Dear (Deer) Grove, Ill., at which place she was married on July 12, 1863, to John Henry Curtis of Elk Grove, Illinois. Here they remained until the spring of 1882, when they came to Wisconsin and settled on a farm near New Lisbon. In 1902 they disposed of the farm and moved to New Lisbon where Mr Curtis died Dec. 11, 1907. At the time of his death, the fatal malady, cancer, which caused her death , had already made its appearance and the efforts of the physicians were baffled in the attempt to stem its awful course. On February 19th of this year, she went to Portage with her sister Mrs. M. L. Curtis, in order to be at the home of her son, R.C. Curtis, where she could receive more care and attention. During the seven months which intervened before demise she was a patient, uncomplaining sufferer. She bore her severe trials with Christian fortitude and welcomed the hour when she might pass to the other shore, where so many loved ones were awaiting her. The end came September 17, 1909, and a kind, helpful, sympathetic, patient, noble wife and mother, a true friend and respected neighbor, passed to her reward.
