Nelson's mother was Maria Cardoza Santos from Pico Island, Azores. She immigrated to America in 1900 (census record); and married in 1907, New Bedford, Bristol Co, Massachusetts. She was a housewife and dressmaker. Her two children were both born in California-Mamie in San Jose, and Nelson in Hollister. Maria preferred Massachusetts to California, so they returned there before her death 28 December 1933 at their home: 46 Rutland Street. She was buried in New Bedford probably in St. John's Cemetery.

Survivor of Bataan Death March. Nelson was one of 513 men rescued and liberated during a daring raid by the 6th U. S. Army Rangers in January of 1945. He was held in Prison Camp No. 1 Luzon Island, in the Philippines.
He later served in Korea.
