AUGUSTINE, DON November 6, 1929 to May 20, 2011 Don Augustine, 81, was born in Los Angeles, California. He moved to San Diego in 1943 and attended San Diego High School, San Diego State University, and graduated from Hastings Law School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Don passed the California State Bar in 1956 and went to work in his father's law firm. That law firm became Marinos, Augustine & Delafield. During his practice he became general counsel to the AFL player's association. He was a pioneer of the real estate securities business and represented some of the largest real estate securities companies in the U.S. After retiring from the practice of law in 1989, he founded Arlen Capital, a real estate investment banking company. He continued to operate Arlen Capital up to the time of his death. Next to his family, Don's passion was skiing. He began skiing in the 1940s by strapping boards to his feet and skiing the San Bernardino Mountains with his Uncle and Aunt. Over time, he collected more than one million vertical feet helicopter skiing in Canada, a major milestone in the heli-skiing community. He skied most all of the mountains and ski resorts in the western U.S., many of them before they were developed, and some areas that will never be developed. From 1961 to 1963, Al Ogle, Jim Ogle, and Don won three consecutive "International Light Tackle Tournaments" for the San Diego Yacht Club fishing together on the boat the "Silverfish". In addition to skiing and fishing, he was an avid tennis player and golfer. Don met his beloved wife, Barbara, playing tennis. Together they skied, played tennis, golf and bridge. Don is survived by his wife Barbara and his children: Greg (Mary), Doug (Kimiko), Lori (Shaun Hughes), David (Kalei) and Lesley (Michael Smith); and Barbara's children Kathleen McCarthy, Maureen Glaser (Scott), and Danny Sooy. Between them they have 19 grandchildren. Don was predeceased by David and Lesley's mother, Lee Augustine, and Kathleen's husband, Michael McCarthy. There is a celebration of his life on Thursday, May 26, 2011, at 4:00 p.m. at the San Diego Yacht Club.
