Joseph Rowland and Barbara Ellen Leaf left Sheffield, England to settle in America. He had been an apprentice in a steel mill and had lost the sight of one eye by a piece of flying steel. He left for America because he felt it was a "land of opportunity." They married in Pittsburgh and in 1869, they homesteaded in Section 24 of Grant township. There were eleven children born but only seven lived to adulthood. They were interested in education and the general growth of the community. Joseph served as supervisor and was involved in early community development as well as politics.
Obituary
Jos. Rolland (sic) Sr., of Grant township, who was reported as being very sick last week, died Monday morning and was buried Wednesday. We have been unable to learn his age or many of the facts connected to his life.

He was one of the first settlers of Grant township and lived to see that beautiful country change from bleak and almost houseless prairie to the well cultivated and thickly settled country that it is now.

He was at one time a member of the Board of Supervisors of this county and is reported as serving the people well in that capacity.

He leaves several children and many friends to mourn his loss
