Ida Smithson, 86, died Jan. 21, 2009. She was born June 5, 1922, in Millard County, Utah, to John and Rozilpha Allen.
She graduated from Brigham Young University with a major in physical education. While there she met John Ladd Smithson and they were married on Jan. 11, 1944, in the Mesa Arizona Temple. They were residents of Flagstaff since 1956.
Mrs. Smithson taught dance, acrobatics and gymnastics for many years. She served in many positions in her church and was known by all her friends as a great cook and seamstress. Over the years, she prepared menus and meals for hundreds of wedding receptions, Relief Society Luncheons, Ward Dinners and bridal and baby showers. She was always sewing something for someone. She was known for her service to others. After retiring she learned to paint with oils and watercolor. In 1988 and 1989, she and her husband served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chickasha, Okla., where she continued sharing her talents. She was a great lady who will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Mrs. Smithson is survived by her husband, John; four children, Joanne Abner, Kerry L. Smithson, Geraldine Sauser and Allen J. Smithson; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Jane Noall.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Norvel Owens Mortuary. A funeral service will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center.
