Gladys Isabelle Bishop was third of the four daughters of Zoma Pearl (née Whitaker) and Ernest Leslie Bishop, born in 1910 in Farmer City, DeWitt County, Illinois. The Bishop family moved by 1916 to LeRoy, McLean County, Illinois, where her father worked as a mechanic, and as a canning factory worker. Gladys I. Bishop graduated Empire Township High in LeRoy in 1929.

Gladys "Isabel" Bishop of Leroy and Herbert Sartain Painter of Lotus, Champaign County, Illinois, were married on 24 September 1930 in Champaign County. The couple, long-time residents of Lotus, were the parents of Richard Gene.
