World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Melbourne, Victoria , Australia, he served as a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment, British Army. During actions near Rue du Bois, France, on June 16, 1915, Corporal Tombs and his unit were held in check by heavy German fire. On his own initiative he crawled out to bring in wounded men who were lying about 100 yards in front of their trenches. He then went out and rescued four men, one of whom he dragged back by means of a rifle sling placed round his own neck and the man's body. For most conspicuous gallantry, he was promoted Corporal and awarded the Victoria Cross presented by King George V at Buckingham Palace on August 12, 1915. After the war, he relocated to Canada and gained employment with the Sun Life Assurance Company in Montreal. During World War II, he served as a Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Force at the Air Force Flying School at Trenton, Ontario. He died at age 78 in Toronto, Canada.
