Maria Catherina Knechtges Steffes was born to her parents Johann Peter Knechtges and Maria Schmitt on August 23, 1836, in Nitz, Kreis Daun, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. She apparently came to the United States with her father in 1853. On April 5, 1856 she married George Steffes in Marytown, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. She apparently lived most of her married life in Fond du Lac County, and died there on March 20, 1891. According to the Catholic Parish records, she is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery there.
