He was born Jan Bos in November 1845 in the small country village of 't Zandt in the northern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningenson of Hindrik Jakobs Bos and Aaltje Jans Pelmulder.

On March 29, 1873 the iron smith Jan Bos married at the age of 27 years at his bride's birthplace Uithuizen the two years younger Grietje Siekman. His father is then a shop keeper.

On April 19, 1893 laborer Jan Bos, his wife Grietje and their children Jan (17 years old), Aaltje (16), Klaas (13), Anna (9), Adolf (7) and Martje (4) arrived on the SS Maasdam at the harbor of New York, Ellis Island. Their last residence place in the Netherlands was Spijk, a country village in the former municipality of Bierum, since 1990 part of mun. Delfzijl, located in the northeast of the province Groningen, and their destination was Bozeman, seat of Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana.

In June 1900 John Bos (57, born in September 1842 [has to be: November 1845] in Holland, immigrated in 1893, farmer), his wife Gertie (53, April 1847, Holland, 1893, mother of 7 living children), their children Henry (23, April 1877, Holland, 1893, black smith), John (25, July 1874, Holland, 1893, black smith), Alice (23, May 1877 [has to be: December 1876], Holland, 1893), Anna (20, October 1879, Holland), Clauzon (17, October 1882, Holland, 1893, farm laborer), Adolph (15, June 1875 [has to be 1885] in New York [has to be Holland] and Martha (12, September 1887, Iowa [has to be Holland]) were living in Manhattan, Gallatin County, Montana.
