Reverend E.C. Mead had charge of the funeral services held at the Methodist church in Staples Thursday afternoon, April 28, at 2 o'clock, for Mrs. Eliza Walker-DeLong, age past 91 years, on Monday April 25.
Eliza Howard was born the daughter of Jessie and Mary Howard in Afton, Illinois on August 16, 1857. Her parents moved to the state of New York where she received education at West Chazy.
On September 5, 1877 she was united in marriage to Jerry L. Walker and it was in 1879 that they moved to Minnesota settling in Thomastown, where they were among the early pioneers of that vicinity. The Walkers continued to reside in Thomastown until 1913 when they moved to Staples where Mr. Walker died in 1928.
Six children were born to this union. Herbert, the oldest of the family, died at the age of one year. Those surviving are Willis M., Floyd H., and Ida Mae all of Staples; Addie of Thomastown, and Wallace in Minneapolis. She is also survived by 18 grand children and 38 great grandchildren.
In 1932 she was united in marriage to Mr. DeLong and resided in New York until his death in 1937, when she returned to Staples where she had since made her home.
All of the children were present for the final rites. Burial was made in the Thomastown cemetery beside the grave of her first husband.
Wadena county had honored her as being the oldest pioneer resident of District 9 where she lived many years. She was a member of the Methodist church.
