Steven Donald Mainquist, the son of Samuel Elmer and Ellen Augusta (Berglund) Mainqust, was born December 30, 1947 in Red Oak, Iowa. He died peacefully on Sunday, May 22, 2011 in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 63 years, 4 months and 22 days.

Steve was raised on the family farm southeast of Red Oak. Steve had been involved with farming all his life; first, by playing with his John Deere tractor toys, and later by helping his Dad with the crops, livestock, apple orchards, gardens, etc. He was a member of the "Grant Spitfires" 4-H club which was formative in his love for animal science. Following the passing of his dad in 1964, Steve's mom Ellen relied on his help to manage and work the farm. He graduated from Red Oak High School with the Class of l966. Steve furthered his education at Iowa State University returning home every weekend from Ames to work, and graduated in 1970. Following graduation, he returned to keep the legacy of farming on the home place going. Steve was united in marriage to Sheila Johnson on January 26, l985 in Stanton, Iowa. Steve was a faithful steward of the land. He began his first term in January of 1981 with the Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District as a District Commissioner. Steve was elected as vice-chair in l992 and then as chair in 1994. He served as chair for 16 years and completed his 30th year as a District Commissioner in December 2010. In July of 2010, he was honored by the Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District for continued efforts in establishing conservation practices on their farm and for his 30 years of service as a District Commissioner. He was a devoted supporter of agriculture, schools and community. Steve was a member and active on the board of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Mills-Montgomery County Cattleman Association and with the Co-op. For many years, Steve enjoyed helping at the Montgomery County Fair livestock shows. Steve was proud of and loved his family dearly, fully supporting all activities they were involved with. He enjoyed sitting in the lawn chair in the evenings admiring farm life with family and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alfred; and special nephew, Sean Korte.

Steve is survived by his wife, Sheila Mainquist of rural Red Oak, IA; children: Christine and John of rural Red Oak, IA; brother, Jerome "Skip" Mainquist and wife Jan of Renton, WA; sisters: Judy Korte and husband Stephen of Shawnee, KS; and Linda Mainquist and husband Mario Orsatti of Washington D.C.; mother-in-law, Myrna Johnson of Stanton, IA; brother-in-law, Neil Johnson and wife Terese of Waverly, NE; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.

May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn.
