GRANT, Gloria Dean Napier Went to be with the Lord on April 30, 2011. She was born in Nashville, TN, on April 24, 1931, to Lura Kate Logan and Robert Edward Lee Napier, and was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved brother, Larry Mayhugh of Springfield, TN. Gloria lived in Woodbury and Old Hickory, TN, until transferring her senior year to David Lipscomb High School where she met her husband of 60 years, Burton Paine Grant. Faith and family were always the main focus of her life, but she found the time and energy to be involved in many interests and to enrich the lives of countless friends and those in need. After two years at David Lipscomb College, Gloria followed her husband to Memphis for medical school; to Augusta, GA, for his military service at Fort Gordon; and twice to Houston, TX, for fellowships at M.D. Anderson. In addition to supporting her husband's work, Gloria pursued several business interests of her own. In the mid-sixties she was a top sales woman with Homecare, Inc. (SWIPE) and also sold her famous fruitcakes at the Green Hills Market. In the seventies she was a founding board member of Nashville! Magazine and began the private jewelry business Lynwood Hampton Collectables with her friend Jean Davis. Gloria was a member of the Centennial Club, Nashville Academy of Medicine Auxiliary, Money Bags Investment Club, Timberlee Garden Club, The Busy-Fingers-and-Fancy-Doers and The Good Sisters Prayer Group. She supported Florence Crittenton, Fanny Battle Day Home, Friends of Children's Hospital (founding member), and the Nashville Public Library Foundation. She enjoyed family gatherings, Bible study, golf, bridge, sewing, gardening, cooking, entertaining and hospitality. Over the years she and Burton hosted many Bible studies, prayers groups and hymn sings in their home. Remembering her crystal blue eyes and dazzling smile are her husband Burton and her four daughters, Gloria Kathleen Grant Harrell (Dan), Mimi Dean Grant Verner (Jerry), Carol Ann Grant Nuismer (Jack), and Amy Lee Grant Gill (Vince); her grandchildren, Edward Grant Harrell (Francesca), Gloria Caroline Harrell Epps (Brian), Kathleen Baker Harrell Murphy (Reid), Michael Burton Harrell, Sarah Anne Armstrong Harrell, Logan Paine Verner (Jenny), Burton Gage Verner (Laura), Gloria Grace Verner, Mimi Napier Verner Stricker (Dan), Elizabeth Grant Nuismer, Catherine Claire Nuismer, N. Jack Nuismer III, Jenny Gill Van Valkenburg (Josh), Matthew Garrison Chapman, Gloria Mills (Millie) Chapman, Sarah Cannon Chapman, Corrina Grant Gill and 10 great-grandchildren, (including another Gloria namesake). The family wants to thank Gloria's loving and truly gifted caregivers, Juliana Darkwa, Grace Arthur, Fitnat Carter and Gertrude Whang, as well as the staff at the Cumberland in Burton Hills and Alive Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you remember Gloria by doing some unexpected act of kindness or making a gift to Lipscomb University or Alive Hospice.
