US Congressman. Peter Frelinghuysen, Jr. represented Morris and Somerset Counties in New Jersey as a Republican in the House of Representatives from 1953 to 1974. In his first year in office, Frelinghuysen spoke out against the Communist witch-hunt of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin. In 1959, Frelinghuysen successfully led the opposition against a proposed airport in Morris County on a piece of land that later became the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Frelinghuysen also supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Frelinghuysen backed many of President Lyndon Johnson's Vietnam War policies. Before becoming a Congressman, Frelinghuysen served his country during World War II. After leaving Congress, Frelinghuysen served in a number of civic positions, including as a board member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He comes from a long line of New Jersey politicians, including four U.S. Senators - his great-great-great-grandfather, Frederick Theodore Frelinghuysen, his great-grandfather, Frederick Theodore Frelinghuysen, his great-great-uncle, Theodore Frelinghuysen, and his cousin, Joseph Sherman Frelinghuysen. His son, Rodney Frelinghuysen, is also a U.S. Congressman.
