He worked for I.E. Lillegard for several years following high school. Russell served in the US Army during World War II in a Military Police Unit in Germany. Following his military service, he attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, graduating in 1950. Russell worked for the Production Credit Association of Fergus Falls, MN, and in St. Paul, MN, as a field accountant. He was later employed by Wahpeton National Bank (Bank of the West) as an auditor. After retirement, he lived on his grandparents' farm near Galchutt, ND, devotedly caring for his aging uncles and aunt.

Russell was baptized in Wausa, NE, and confirmed at Bethania Lutheran Church (Bethany Free Lutheran Church) by Rev. Victor L. Peterson in 1937.

Russell was a member of Bethany Free Lutheran Church and served as treasurer for several years. He also served as Abercrombie Township Assessor.
