William T. "Bill" Barnhill, 95, of Goliad, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016. He was born in La Grange, Texas, to William T. and Edna Taylor Barnhill on Oct. 30, 1920.

When World War II broke out after Pearl Harbor, Bill and his older brother, Sam, flipped a coin to see who could enlist first. The loser would have to stay with the family farming and ranching operations. Bill lost, so Sam enlisted. After carrying a load of sheep to market in San Antonio on a cold and rainy night, Bill enlisted in April of 1943. He joined the Army Air Corps, trained as a pilot and was sent to North Africa and then Italy as Co-Pilot on a B-24 bomber with the 376th Heavy Bomber Group, the "Liberandos", part of the Fifteenth Air Force.

Bill flew nineteen combat missions, some as pilot and some as co-pilot. His plane was shot down by German fighters over Wels, Austria on Feb. 23, 1944. Bill bailed out, was captured and spent the last fourteen months of the war as a POW in Stalag Luft I, near Barth, Germany.

After the war, Bill returned to Goliad and married his sweetheart, Ruth "Peetle" Hensley on July 28, 1945. Bill remained in the military for five years after the war. He and Peetle were stationed first in Panama, where their son, Bill, was born, then in Jamaica and finally at Randolph Air Base in San Antonio, where their son, John, was born. In 1950, Bill left the military, and he and his young family returned to Goliad and began dairy and ranching operations.

In 1960, Bill was elected Goliad County Commissioner for Precinct 1 and he served until 1988. Bill was very active in South Texas skeet and trap shooting and was considered one of the top area shooters in the 60's and 70's.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Peetle.

He is survived by his sons, Bill (Robin) and John (Cynthia); and grandchildren, Will and James Barnhill, Travis and Forrest Dye and Cevin Willeke and Cryston Fromme.

Visitation with the family was held at the home of John and Cynthia Barnhill, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12. By his request, a brief graveside service was held at Glendale Cemetery on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Friends of the Fort, PO Box 57, Goliad, TX 77963, or donor's choice.
