Development battalions were organized for soldiers that would normally not be accepted into service because of illiteracy or other mental or physical problems. The idea was to work with whatever problems the soldiers had so they could eventually fill normal units, but some were later discharged.
Aug. 8, 1918: attended by J. Cafferty, Captain, M.C. while suffering for 10 days from uremia and chronic nephritis.
Aug. 19, 1918: age 27; died at 3:25 AM at Base Hospital, Camp Sevier, SC.

Gravesite Details
Body sent by train from Greenville, SC to Greeneville, TN. Aug. 26, 1918: burial at Weems Cemetery. Left a U.S. Government Life Insurance policy which was divided among his sisters. It was a monthly check that continued for many years.
