Baseball pioneer. Joined the New York Knickerbockers shortly after its formation in 1845, was later president of the club. Helped formulate the rules of the modern game and is said to have invented the shortstop position. He also served as chairman of the rules committee of the governing body of baseball in the 1850's (the National Association of Baseball Players). He resigned from active membership from baseball organizations in 1862. Dr. Adams was thereafter a prominent resident of Ridgefield, Connecticut, before moving to New Haven in 1888. Many baseball historians consider him one of the "Fathers of Baseball".

Adams was included on the 2016 ballot (for early players and pioneers) for election into Baseball's Hall of Fame. He obtained 10 of the 12 votes needed. He will be included on the ballot for election in 2022.
