Daughter of Matthew Stone McCormack & Mary "Polly" Hill

Wife of Albert Gatewood Williams

Marriage Date/Place: September 30, 1890, Massac County, Illinois

Mother of Roswell Albert Williams, Bess Jane Williams, Chester Frederick Williams, Joseph Williams & Albert Gatewood Williams Jr.

I love this story my grandfather, Charles A. Williams, used to tell about his grandmother Edna:

"She was a very sweet lady. Very petite and in her later years, she could barely see over the steering wheel of her big Buick. She would drive too fast, run over curbs, hit parked cars and fire hydrants. She was just a menace on the road. She looked like the little old lady from the Tweetie Bird cartoons driving in that car. The police would show up at the scene of her accidents, see who it was, shake their heads and say 'Are you alright, Mrs. Williams?' then they would escort her home and never gave her a ticket. Why? Because she was the Mayor's mother. But they always called Uncle Joe to tell on her which irritated her."

Murphysboro Woman Wins Chicago Lot

Mrs. A. G. Williams of Murphysboro is the winner of the third prize offered by the Chicago Real Estate Board for the best brief reason "Why I would like to own real estate in Chicago."

Third prize is a lot in Dorchester street in the fashionable Wheaton suburb.

Mrs. Williams is requested to go to Chicago, meet the real estate board making the awards, and see her prize. She will leave the formality of acceptance to her son, Joe, who is in Chicago.

Mrs. Williams, interviewed by The Independent today, said:

"In answering I said that in my travels I found the people of many states, in speaking to me of Illinois, inevitable mentioned Chicago. They had been there or they were going there sometime.

"I enclosed in my answer an old newspaper clipping showing that my great uncle, James Thompson, drove the first surveyor's stake for the platting of the original village of Chicago."

Mrs. Williams' answer was one of 1400 considered. First prize went to Alabama, second to Chicago and third to Murphysboro.

Note: In the above newspaper story, Edna mentions her great uncle, James Thompson. She is referring to James Glasgow Thompson, who married her grandmother's sister. Edna's grandmother was Sarah Thompson Hill and her sister was Margaret Thompson Thompson, wife of James Glasgow Thompson.
