Spanish-American War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. An 1898 graduate of the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, he served in the War with Spain as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th United States Infantry, being posted to that duty just a few weeks after his graduation. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Santiago, Cuba, on July 2, 1898. His citation reads "Voluntarily left shelter and went, under fire, to the aid of a private of his company who was wounded". His Medal was awarded to him on June 21, 1899. He remained in the Army, rising to the rank of Colonel and seeing service during the Philippine Insurrection, the Boxer Rebellion, and World War I. After the tank was introduced to the battlefield in World War I, Ira Welborn was detailed to be the first head of the fledgling United States Army Tank Corps. His son, John C. Welborn, also attended West Point, rose to the rank of Colonel, and commanded the the United States Army's 33rd Armored Regiment during World War II.
