"J. E. Garfield, distinguished veteran of the civil war and second cousin of the martyred president James A. Garfield, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. 0. L. Stump of Sylvan Street, at four o'clock this morning. Mr. Garfield who was seventy-eight years of age, has been afflicted with paralysis and succumbed to a particularly severe stroke.
The deceased was born in Chittendan, Vermont, coming to Upper Sandusky, Ohio, when a child and spending practically his entire life in that town. When Lincoln issues has call to American patriots he responded eagerly and the name of J. E. Garfield was the first on the list of volunteers in his home town.
He was a member of the Fifty-fifth Ohio regiment, company K. So the love of country seems to have been a salient trait in the Garfield family. Through the influence of his cousin, James, who afterward became president, and who even then was a force in the nation, his release was obtained from Libby prison after eighteen months spent in that shame of the South, The release was obtained through an exchang of Union and Confederate prisoners, Mr. Garfield was full of reminiscences of war times and the warm friendship which always existed between himself and his famous relative. The great Garfield had no stauncher admirer than his playmate of childhood days.
Surviving children of the deceased are Mr. David Garfield and Mrs. 0. L. Stump, of this city, Mrs John Dingle of Upper Sandusky and Mr. A. K. Garfield or Pasadena. California. Tho remains will be shipped to Upper Sandusky for burial at 10:25 o'clock Wednesday morning. Interment will be made in the historical old Mission cemetery in that place."
