Enlisted in the 7th U.S. Cavalry on 4 November 1872. He was in H troop with Frederick Benteen, where he was a Sgt, at the Little Big Horn. Was a participant in the Reno Hill fight, with Benteen, Reno and Weir. He was wounded there.
