Dennis L. Horntvedt, 80, Minot, formerly of Columbus, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 19, 2011, in Minot with his family at his side.

Dennis was born July 30, 1930, on the family farm in Forthun Township, Burke County, a son of Lars and Jennie (Kihle) Horntvedt. He attended Brookside Elementary School and graduated from Columbus High School in 1947.

In April 1953, Dennis was united in marriage to Patricia Bourdeau at the Columbus Lutheran Parsonage. Four children were born to this union, two sons and two daughters.

He took over the operation of the family farm after the death of his father in December 1953. From 1954 until 1958, he worked for Great Plains Supply Co. in Columbus. In the fall of 1958, he went to work for the Truax Traer Coal Co. at the Kincaid Mine as an office employee, a position he held until 1964. He then became a bin inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a supervisor for F.H.A. for a number of years. Dennis performed all of these duties while continuing to operate the family farm.

Dennis was very active in numerous civic, agricultural and church organizations. He was a weather observer for 28 years. He was a sexton for the Pleasant Prairie Cemetery for 35 years and was a Forthun Township assessor for 40 years. He was a Lutheran Brotherhood volunteer for many years and served as treasurer for the NW Prairie Branch 8728.

He was a 4-H leader for a number of years and his judging team won first place in cattle judging at the Valley City Winter Show. He was a member of Pleasant Prairie Lutheran Church until its merger with Trinity Lutheran Church, when he became a member of the merged congregation. He served on the church council, taught Sunday school and adult Bible study and sang in the church choir.

In 1988, he transferred his membership to Faith Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council, sang in the church choir and served as secretary-treasurer for 10 years. He was a member of the Columbus Men's Quartet for many years, singing for many funerals in the area. As a member of this quartet, highlights were singing for his brother Les' ordination in June 1963 and singing for a member of the quartet's wedding. He also sang solos for many funerals and weddings in the area.

In 1995, he and Patricia purchased a home in Minot and spent the winter months there.

Music was a great part of Dennis' life as well as his love for the land. He was devoted to his family and had a strong commitment to the church and to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
