Mary's father Robert Johnston was the son of James Johnston and Mary Bryson, of Ryselaw, Scotland. Her mother Mary McCaw was the daughter of Dr. James McCaw and Elizabeth Brough of Heighten, Galloway, Scotland.

Mary married Robert Pickett in Richmond on 19 June 1823. Mary’s father and Robert’s father were business partners (the firm of Pickett, Pollard and Johnston) in Richmond. Robert himself was engaged in the coal business. The 1860 Census lists Mary as having property and a lady of independent means.

Mary and Robert were parents to General George Pickett of Gettysburg fame. George's first wife Sally Minge Pickett is buried near them in the Robert Johnston plot.
