Helen Louise "Pat" Aikman, 86, of Pittsburg, Kansas died on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Prescott Country View Nursing Home in Prescott, Kansas. She had been in ill health for the past six years. She was born August 20, 1924 at Pittsburg, to John Wesley and Leona May (West) Buffington. On May 15, 1956, she was united in marriage to George Aikman. He preceded her in death on December 12, 1999. She is survived by a daughter, Lena Wilson and husband, Doug of LaCygne, KS; a son, Danny Buffington of Pittsburg, KS; a step-daughter, June Vanderpool and husband, George of Pittsburg; her sister, Lena Baloh of Frontenac, KS; three grandchildren, Sarah Wilson of LaCygne, Katie Heermanson and husband, Tylor of Lenexa, KS, and Marlana Buffington of Frontenac, KS; 7 step-grandchildren, Duke Aikman and wife, Jamie of Kingston, WA, Penny Decoteau and husband, Richard of Kingston, WA, Steve Vanderpool and wife, Tina of Pittsburg, KS, Troy Aikman of Pittsburg, KS, Shelly Aikman of Grove, OK, Bill Aikman of Optima, OK, Tina Gilbert and husband, Richard of Leroy, KS; numerous step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Carl Hester Merrill; a step-granddaughter, Penny Vanderpool Burrous; two sisters, Ruby Lucille Buffington and Geneva Mason; and 5 brothers, Roy Atkinson, Lester Buffington, Cecil Buffington, Charles Buffington, and Robert Buffington. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday (May 25) at the Crocker Cemetery, southeast of Pittsburg, with Dan Muter officiating. Burial will follow services. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Tuesday. The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
