Selina was born Selina Bevis in 1871 in Moorsholm, Yorkshire, England, to Edward and Harriet Bevis (nee Southwood). Edward Bevis, an ironstone miner, died between 1881 and 1885 when Harriet married George Wellings. After the family emigrated to Indiana, Selina and her siblings became known by the surname Wellings rather than Bevis.
