URBANA – Nicole A. Campbell, 68, of Urbana went to heaven at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at home with her daughter, Angela, and son-in-law at her side.

Nicole was born Dec. 8, 1939, in Vorst, Belgium, the daughter of Karel Jaak Hendrik Dubuisson and Adrienne Josephine "Madeline" Dubois. After Nicole's mother passed away when Nicole was 4, she was raised by her beloved Tantie, Irma Scimone Pinoie.

Nicole met her husband, Charles Freeman Campbell, in 1958 while he was stationed in Belgium serving in the U.S. Air Force. Charles and Nicole were married April 4, 1959, in Brussels, Belgium. Charles preceded Nicole in death on Oct. 2, 2006.

Charles and Nicole relocated to Champaign after he was discharged from the Air Force and went on to have four children. Surviving are Nicole's three daughters, Angela Fred (John Sussen) of Urbana, Tammy Phelps (Ronald Phelps) of Manchester, Mo., and Elizabeth Campbell (George Roth) of San Anselmo, Calif.; and one son, Charles Henry Edward Campbell (Lisa Campbell) of Oakwood.

Nicole was blessed with two grandchildren, Regan Jennifer Fred and Brandon Phelps.

Nicole will be remembered by her many talents, one of which was quilting. She opened Sweet Nothings Quilt Shop at Peddlers Village in Sunnycrest Mall in Urbana in 1976. After Peddlers Village was closed, she continued her shop at 208 N. Neil on the Downtown Champaign Mall. Like many other struggling businesses at the time, Nicole was forced to close her shop in 1986. Nicole went on to operate Cheap Charlies Thrift Shop in Champaign until her diagnosis of throat cancer in 2000.

Nicole won the battle with throat cancer in 2005, but was later diagnosed with leukemia in 2003 and lung cancer in March 2007.

After her diagnosis with lung cancer, Nicole resided with her daughter, Angela. Angela took care of her mom daily throughout her fight against this terrible disease. Nicole was thought of as the "Energizer Bunny" by all who knew her during her heroic battles with cancer.

Her daughter, Angela, was grateful to have this time with her mom and she will miss her dearly.

Nicole wanted to let everyone know how grateful she was to all of the wonderful nurses and doctors at Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle Hospice who gave 110 percent to her care.

She told Angela days before she passed that her proudest moment was when she became a United States citizen on Sept. 8, 1971.

Private services will be held at Nicole's request. Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory 1900 S. Philo Road, is handling arrangements. She is comforted by Tang.

Condolences can be offered to Angela Fred at 2304 E. University Ave., Urbana.

Memorials should be offered to your friends or loved ones, with your time, who have also had the unfortunate diagnosis of cancer. For every hour you spend with cancer patients brings them another hour of hope.
