David "Davey" Leroy Donley, 54, a lifelong resident of Defiance, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at the CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center after a sudden and short illness.

He was born on January 28, 1957, to Leo and Charlene (Froelich) Donley in Defiance. Preceding him in death were his father, Leo; and grandparents, Ed and Agnes Froelich, Defiance, and Dorwin and Sylvia Donley of Napoleon.

He graduated from Good Samaritan School in 1978, and worked for 25 years at McDonald's East Side, where he took care of the lobby. Davey loved people and would always introduce himself and talk to everyone. No one was ever a stranger to Dave. Davey loved the outdoors. He rode his bike everywhere, went on numerous fishing trips to Canada and took care of his yard and garden. He lived on his own for over 15 years, where he took care of all his own needs. He spent many summer weekends at Crooked Lake in Angola.

While at Good Sam, he competed in the Special Olympics, winning trophies and medals playing basketball, and was on the swim team. He was always a team player and played on the school teams many years. Davey loved to dance and never missed a chance to dance at weddings or school functions. He couldn't hold still to Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson. He never missed a WWF match on TV and his favorite wrestlers were The Rock and John Cena. He was active in the senior program at Good Sam until his death.

He is survived by his mother who never let his disability get in the way of anything Dave wanted to do. Also surviving are his brother, Leo (June) Donley of Morgantown, W.Va.; sisters, Karen (Steve) Fenter of Defiance and Vicky Joice (Dan Lambert) of Defiance; nephews, Daniel (Kerri Schindler) Donley, Jason (Gayle) Fenter, Erik (Kathy Snyder) Fenter and Mike (Andrea Rosen) McCabe; niece, Dawn (Mark) Ankney; seven great-nieces and nephews; and his beloved little dog, Sammy. Dave's wit, humor, dedication and determination were an inspiration to everyone who knew him and he will be sadly missed.

Many special thanks go to all the people at Good Samaritan School and DRMC for their unending dedication given to David throughout his life. The nurses at Defiance Regional Medical Center and his caregivers at Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center will never be forgotten. The care David received couldn't have been better.

The family asks in lieu of flowers and gifts to please make a donation in his name to Good Samaritan, Ronald McDonald House or Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center. Visitation and services will be Saturday, May 21, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., with a memorial service at 1 p.m. at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, with a private burial at a later date. Condolences can be left online at www.HCSfuneralhome.com.

David is gone and our hearts are heavy and our tears are flowing. We are better today because David was a part of our lives. His accomplishments and his drive to succeed are unequaled. If we all could see people, life and the world the way David always saw it, there would be no violence, no wars, no hatred, no crime, no greed or corruption. Just peace, love and happiness.
