Descendants have him as being born in Bolivar County, MS. However, the 1870 Census has him in Carroll County, MS. This is also where his parents are in the 1850 Census so that is what is used here.

His first wife, Martha died in 1899 and the 1900 Census finds him in Sunflower County, MS (listed as being widowed) with 2 sons, Marvin and Walter, and 2 daughters, Effie and Eva. The other son, William, had died in 1890. In the 1910 Census, he is in Bolivar County, MS. With him are his children (Walter, Effie and Eva) and his wife of 9 years, Jennie M. The census notes that she had birthed 2 children but none had survived at this point. The 1920 Census has William and Eugenie still in Bolivar County, MS and now with a daughter, Emma. The 1930 Census finds William living with daughter Effie and her son and listed as widowed again. His young daughter Emma is living with her uncle Jesse Hammond.

To date, we have not found the final resting place of William's second wife Eugenie "Jennie". According to the census records, she was born about 1879 in Mississippi and died between 1920 and 1930.
