Truman was born the day New Fairfield was burned during the Revolutionary War. Their home was spared as his mother was in labor. His father Gideon was fighting to save the town. This was recorded in the midwife's journal. Truman had a great knowledge of making maple syrup. He moved to Harpersfield, Delaware County, New York in 1806. On May 28, 1837 he was dismissed to a church in Holly, Delaware County, New York (Church records, New Fairfield, Connecticut). In 1829 Truman moved to Huntsburg, Geauga County, Ohio. He was accompanied by his wife, two sons, daughter Hannah Byrum and their families. The group traveled by covered wagon or by horseback.
