Robert was born on April 18, 1877 in Germany. He was the son of Johann Grams and Eva Rosina Hedt Grams Henke. On October 26, 1905, he married Laura Sophie Stork in Fayette County, Texas. They lived in Travis, Karnes, and Harris Counties, and had two sons, Bennie and Milton. Robert worked as a blacksmith and a plasterer.

He died on June 26, 1958 in Houston.
