James D. "Jim" Michaelis of Newcastle died Aug. 14 in Billings, Mont.

He was born July 31, 1928, to Henry W. and Rhea (Phelan) Michaelis in Basin.

Mr. Michaelis had worked for the C.B. & Q Railroad. He had also been employed by the Big Horn Sheriff's Department. He began working for the Wyoming Highway Patrol in 1961 in Casper he later transferred to Newcastle and Cheyenne. He retired as head of the Safety and Training Division in Cheyenne in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.

He married Jean Gilbertson Jan. 7, 1951, in Billings.

Mr. Michaelis is survived by his wife, Jean of Newcastle; three sons, Jim Michaelis of Bremerton, Wash., Tim Michaeilis of Loveland, Colo., and Kim Michaelis of Cheyenne; two daughters, Nancy Rambin of Sacramento, Calif., and Janie Sukut of Bozeman, Mont; three brothers, Richard Michaelis of Cheyenne, Bill Michaelis of Buffalo and Michael Michaelis of Seattle, Wash.; and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Pat Michaelis and Jerry Michaelis.
