Joseph was drowned in the Susquehanna River in about 1873. His lantern and gloves were found on the bridge. It was thought that he met a Sullivan, an enemy who was jealous of his acquiring property, the farm in Broome Cty.,New York and the flats in Great Bend,Pennsylvania, also a block uptown where a hotel and apartments were. They may have had an argument or fight, it was believed. His body was found in the spring, washed up farther down the river.
