Born near Lünau, Stüblau parish, West Prussia, Germany (his mother's home town), to parents Johann Lipke (Catholic) and Auguste Richard (Protestant), August was baptized there on 18 March 1866. On 9 June 1889 he married Anna Auguste Ruschinski; they lived in Guettland, West Prussia (today Kozliny, Poland), and had three children before immigrating to Syracuse, New York in 1893 on the ship STUTTGART, sailing from Bremen to New York City along with several other families from that area of West Prussia.
In Syracuse August worked as a laborer, a day laborer, and was employed by the Solvay Process Company. He was the father of nine children, including one who was born and died between 1900 and 1910, name unknown; the rest are linked below.
August Liepke, Sr. died too soon, of cancer. His obituary appeared in The Syracuse Post-Standard, Friday, September 30, 1910, page 7, col. 2:

AFTER MONTH'S ILLNESS
August Lipka of No. 221 West Division street died at 6 o'clock last evening at St. Josephs Hospital, where he had been a patient one month. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Tina Lipka, six sons, John, Frank, August, Fred, Leonard, and Anthony Lipka, one daughter, Anna Lipka, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lipka of of [sic] Germany, and three brothers, Michael and Frank Lipka of Germany and John Lipka of Syracuse. Mr. Lipka was 44 years old and was a member of the St. Fidelis Society and the German Branch of the Holy Name Society of the Church of the Assumption. Arrangements have not been completed for the funeral. The body is at F. C. Wenz & Co.'s undertaking rooms.
