A Buncombe County lawyer, Brown enlisted as a pvt. at age 29 and in September received a transfer as the regiment's assistant quartermaster, with a collateral promotion to captain. The 4th North Carolina received the official designation as the the 14th Nort Carolina.

Throughout May and june the 14th N.C. took part in the battles of Seven Pines, Mechanicsville, and at Cold Harbor, near Powhite Swamp, charged a Federal position with Major Gen. D.H. Hill's Division. But the Battle of Malvern Hill, the last of the Seven Days Battles around Richmond, would also be the last for Captain Brown.

Sixty-four percent, or 164,000, of the Confederates who died in the war succumbed to disease. On July 6, 1862 in a Richmond hospital, William Caleb Brown joined their number.
